  • To assess patients with difficult access for appropriate vascular access device (VAD). To place peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) and difficult peripheral intravenous (IV) starts. To assist staff with troubleshooting catheter issues and provide education and recommendation to staff on new and existing products and policies.


  • Assesses patients for appropriate vascular access device through administration of early assessment and response to physician consults.

  • Assists in creating, evaluating and updating policies and procedures related to PICC and vascular access.

  • Documents PICC insertion procedure, complications, interventions, outcomes and family/patient education in medical record as well as enters and confirms charges.

  • Educates staff nurses regarding care of PICCs and serves as a resource to staff and physicians. Presents vascular access program with emphasis on PICCs during new employee orientation.

  • Evaluates new products related to vascular access and makes recommendations on cost savings while maintaining quality.

  • Maintains CEUs for certifications.

  • Performs procedures to insert PICC and difficult peripheral IV starts.

  • Performs routine dressing changes and maintenance of PICC and central venous lines.

  • Graduate from an accredited School of Nursing and two (2) years of related acute care experience.

  • Work experience may NOT substitute for minimum education requirement.


  • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required

  • Currently licensed as a Registered Nurse in the State of Alabama

  • Intravenous (IV) Certification required within ninety (90) days of hire

  • Peripherally inserted central catheter (PICC) Certification required within ninety (90) days of hire


  • Attends all mandatory education and training programs (including department specific) and can describe his/her responsibilities related to general safety and regulatory compliance as well as department safety and specific job-related hazards.

  • Maintains all required CEUs for certifications and licensure.

  • Follows the hospital exposure control plans/bloodborne and airborne pathogens.

  • Attire is professional, neat, clean, and appropriate for the work environment, according to the BHS and/or Department Appearance Policy and a high standard of personal cleanliness is maintained.

  • Reports to work on time and meets acceptable standard for attendance, based upon the department attendance policy.
